Judy's Art Workshop

Our experienced Art teacher shares with you some tried and tested techniques for great art lessons.

Ideas using acetate sheets.
I have used these techniques when focusing on such themes /topics as "Materials and change", "The changing seasons", "line", "texture" and " cards for special occasions".

Tissue tree skeletons.

Materials required:

Acetates, sheets of brown tissue, packet of cold water paste.

Stimulus:
Students observed winter trees in the park, paintings of trees in winter [Ravilious] and photographs.

Method:
Explore paste powder.
Have fun with water!
Mix both together [note changes]
Name and explore tissue [e.g. blow to each other, drop from a height].
Tear tissue and put in glue.
Squeeze through fingers, removing excess glue and creating long sticky strips.
Place on acetate in shape of skeletal tree.
Leave to dry [two days approx.]
Students recall lesson.
Students feel trees, peel off acetate [magic!]

Mounted on a background – the trees look 3D!
Trees in spring summer and autumn can also be created.
I have made flower heads in the same way and used them for greetings cards.
I'm sure the possibilities are endless!

Abstract patterns.

Materials:
P.V.A. glue, acetate sheets, bottled paint, yogurt pots for mixing.

Abstract Patterns
Method:

Name paint colours.
Choose colour.
Pour P.V.A. glue into pot, add colour, mix.
Use spoon or syringe to make pattern on acetate [make sure the colours join up at some point.]
Leave to dry. [Could take a week.]
Peel pattern off the acetate, feel.
Hang as mobile or stick on windows.

String patterns

Materials:
P.V.A. glue, ball of string, paint, acetate sheets.

Method:

Explore glue, ball of string. Cut string.
Add paint to colour glue – explore.
Colour string with coloured glue.
Drop lengths of string onto acetate.
Leave to dry.
Peel off backing and hang as mobile or mount on board to create 3D abstract picture.

I have used large sheets of plastic in place of acetates and we have made huge spiders webs.
