Sensory Play ideas

Flour- tip from a height, can your learner track it with their eyes/try to catch it with their hands?

Put some on a tray to explore, draw patterns in the flour with fingers or a fork- add spoon, plastic cups etc for filling and emptying.

Mixing bowl- pretend to mix, tap spoon on bowl to make a good noise. Let your learner bang on the bowl with the spoon.

Lemons and golden syrup – smell each item. Does your learner show likes/dislikes? Do they show a preference for one? Taste each with a dab on the lips, and watch for reactions.

Tea towel or table cloth- have a go at holding the corners and shaking the cloth. Can your  learner hold a corner too, and shake it? Try shaking it up in the air and then down low. Shake it fast and then shake it slow. Your learner might enjoy hiding under the material. We like to sing ‘someone’s hiding’ to the tune of ‘London’s burning’. It goes like this…

Someone’s hiding, someone’s hiding,

Shall we find them?

Shall we find them?

Pull, pull,

Pull, pull,

It’s…………….!

When it gets to the end you night want to wait to see if your learner will pull the cloth off their own head!

Repeat any parts of the story your learner shows a preference for. And don’t be afraid to do the same story lots of times, most learners love a bit of repetition!
